'Twas 19 Days Before Alaska's General Election

Time is closing in fast for this year's November 7th Election. With Alaska's history of close elections (shall we remind you of this year's coin toss to break the tie in House District 37's primary election?), every vote counts. Whether you decide to vote by absentee ballot, to vote early or to vote in person, make sure your voice is heard this election season. Here are some of the important dates and pieces of information for this year's election:

--Monday, October 23 is the start of the period for absentee in-person, absentee by fax, early voting and special needs voting. People can vote in-person up to 15 days before the election at designated times and places. A full listing of the times and locations for in-person absentee voting can be found at the following link. For more information on all the different ways you can vote early or absentee, visit the Division of Elections here.

--Saturday, October 28 is the deadline for the Division of Elections to receive applications for an absentee ballot. Applications for an absentee ballot can be found here. Vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked no later than Election Day, November 7th. For more information on voting by mail, click here.

--On Tuesday, November 7, vote! For more information, visit the Division of Elections' webpage.

ACV's Voter Guide will be released prior to the election and will be mailed out to ACV members.

Don't forget to vote on November 7th. Double your impact and bring a friend!

ACV's 'Early Birds for the Environment' Gubernatorial Forum & Breakfast

On October 4th, Alaska Conservation Voters hosted a conservation-minded political forum--the first of its kind in the state of Alaska--with gubernatorial candidates Sarah Palin, Andrew Halcro and Tony Knowles. At the event, moderator Steve McDonald from KTUU TV, Channel 2 asked candidates questions on topics ranging from the Alaska natural gas pipeline to aerial wolf hunting to "bridges to nowhere" funding.

For those of you who were unable to attend, video footage of the candidate's responses to the various questions can now be found on the Alaskans for Truth in Politics website.

Several photos of the event can be found below.

Municipal Elections Update

Here you have it! -- ACV's election results for the 2006 local races in Fairbanks, the Mat-Su, Ketchikan, the Kenai, Juneau and Lake & Pen.  The bottom line: of the 11 pro-conservation candidates across the state endorsed by ACV, 10 are now elected or re-elected officials.  The real bottom line: voters are saying loud and clear, "conservation is an Alaskan value!"

Fairbanks
ACV endorsed Mayor Jim Whitaker who easily won re-election
as Mayor of the Fairbanks North Star Borough.  In Assembly seat F, pro-conservation incumbent Nadine Hargesheimer defeated her challenger, while ACV endorsed newcomer Mike Musick went on to win Assembly seat G.  Of the nine members of the FNSB, 7 are pro-conservation ACV endorsed candidates - quite the super majority!

Mat-Su
Conservation is at it's peak in the valley!  Valley residents overwhelmingly voted to support their environment, economy and quality of life by electing several pro-conservation candidates to the Mat-Su Assembly.  6 of the 7 Assembly members are now ACV endorsed candidates, such as District 3 winner Michelle Church, District 6 winner Robert Wells and unopposed District 7 winner Tom Kluberton.  Congratulations valley citizens!

Kenai Peninsula
ACV likes to support their friends, and there are no better friends then Kenai Assembly Members Ron Long and Milli Martin.  The District 6 and District 9 incumbents ran unopposed this year and will continue to bring economic prosperity and conservation ethics to the peninsula.

City and Borough of Juneau
Mayor Bruce Botelho will be able to continue his unparalleled conservation efforts and keep Juneau moving in the right direction.  Way to go Mr. Mayor!

Ketchikan Gateway Borough
ACV endorsed candidate Gregory Vickery waged a great battle for a shot at one of the Ketchikan Borough Assembly's two open seats.  Vickery, a newcomer to the gateway community, garnered an impressive percentage of the vote but fell short.  But like all Alaskans who believe we can have a strong environment and economy, he'll be back...

Lake and Peninsula Borough
In the Lake and Peninsula Borough, ACV endorsed candidate Ronald Lind won a seat on the borough assembly.  Lind has been strong opponent of the proposed Pebble Mine in the Bristol Bay region.  Lind will be a advocate for responsible development in balance with the region's most valuable resource: salmon!
