Alaska Coastal Management Program: Helping Communities Meet the Deadline

Donate
When Governor Murkowski gutted the Alaska Coastal Management Program (ACMP) with 2003's HB 191, he only gave communities until July 2005 to completely rewrite their local plans to meet impossible guidelines. The federal government hasn't even approved the state's plan yet, and so local districts could be faced with rewriting their plans twice if this unrealistic deadline is not extended.

In order to bail out communities, Rep. Beth Kerttula, the House State Affairs Comittee, and Sen. Gary Stevens have introduced HB 146, HB 189, and SB 102, respectively, to extend the looming deadline.

What You Can Do:
Contact your legislator to tell them the Coastal Management Program is essential for local control over development, including off-shore fish farming in federal waters. Communities also need more time to develop coastal plans which comply with the state's new guidelines.
